I think I have found the perfect gin to celebrate with. I have always wanted something that could replicate the feeling of champagne but in gin. Mirari Celebration Gin is the one. 23 carat gold flakes swimming in beautifully crafted gin is my type of party.
Produced by Time Anchor Distillery in the vibrant Maboneng precinct, this distillery, was founded in 2013 by Owner and Head Distiller, Shanna-Rae Wilby, and her now husband, Warrick Brown. The distillery creates a boutique range of authentically crafted gins, whiskeys, rums and liqueurs in small batches.
Mirari Gin comes in a range of very artistic type of bottles. There's so many, I have to list them:
Mirari Blue Orient Spice Gin
Mirari Pink Damask Rose Gin
Mirari Shimmer range (This exclusive range is the abovementioned standard bottles but have a mystical shimmer to it
Last but not least, the Mirari Celebration Gin
Deciding to try the Celebration gin was a no brainer. Gin with gold - am I ballin' or what?! A friend of mine said I should try it - So I went Norman Goodfellow's and nabbed a bottle. This is gin is my champagne of gin. Cliche, but from now when I feel like celebrating something and I don't want bubbles, I am buying Mirari.
It's smooth and tastes more to the floral side for me, but the makers say it's distilled with 13 hand selected botanicals, including freshly peeled blood orange, lemon, lime and grapefruit, which is gently vapour infused for a bright, bold citrus taste. Celebration Gin also sugar free, gluten free and vegan friendly, with no artificial flavourings or colourings. Healthy too? Sign me up! 😄
The first time I had Mirari gin was about 3 years ago at a wine festival at Emperor's Palace. A couple of dudes had a stand where they were selling gin cocktails and these big beautiful goblet glasses. I was initially intrigued by the goblets (Im a glassware fanatic FYI). SO when I approached their stall, I saw the gin and the gin changed colour... I was like what concoction is that?! 😍 I left that stall with a cocktail that was blue but turned pink when mixed with tonic and two Time Anchor Goblets. I still have those glasses.. lol

When I bought this bottle I was super excited to try it. I thought the gold carats would have flavour, Don't ask me why lol. The gold felt like paper, nothing exciting actually - It would've been a bonus if the gold was more of little small balls, that way I could pick them out, LMAO.
For the week that I drank this bottle I took it everywhere with me 🤣 My boyfriend's soccer match, the braai I went to. I had it with breakfast that other saturday - I wanted everyone to see it. Why? because it looks gorgeous! and everyone agreed. People would come up to me and say so.. when are drinking this bottle??? lol I was very stingy with this one I wanted it all to myself to enjoy. Also, it was kinda appropriate because work has had me by the balls and so it was a great reliever 🙂
So we come to the mixing, a classic GnT is compulsory - we know this by now. With this gin, I went to the extreme a little bit. Please do not try this at home if you are weak, LOL. No for real, don't try it. For the rest of you savages, here goes:
You will need a glass of champagne, 1-2 shots of Celebration Gin; depending on how strong you want it. Then.. a can of JC Le Roux La Fleurette, this is a light sparkling wine that comes in a 250 ml can. Pour your gin in the glass and top it up with the JC Le Roux can and drink responsibly (By this I mean have one glass and don't try and kill yourself with another round 😂) This is a beautiful cocktail but it HITS!!!!! My world started spinning after having the first sip.
The makers at Time Anchor recommend a classic Cuban cocktail with a delicious gin twist; Add Mirari Gin, lime juice, sugar syrup and mint leaves into a highball glass. Half fill the glass with crushed ice, and gently churn. Add lime wedges. Top with more crushed ice and soda water. Garnish with mint and Enjoy.
Pricing? I got this bottle for about R399 at Norman but it is easily available at most liquor stores. The price could differ a little bit plus minus. What I suggest you do is make a day out of it..Time Anchor Distillieries offers a charmingly intimate Tasting Room provides an informative yet enchanting gin tasting experience for all gin enthusiasts.
From the 120 000 5c coins (which were laid by hand) covering the floor, to the alchemist’s shelf of glass-jarred gin botanicals, the mysterious elegance and allure of our Tasting Room provides the perfect setting to sit back and immerse yourself on the indulgent flavours of the gin. They also offer a tour of the distillery where you can also purchase some bottles, so why not? I'm definitely going to be visiting them soon.
Kudos to everyone involved in making these beautiful craft gins, slowly but surely i am immersing myself and learning a whole lot about the gin industry in SA. This was a beautiful gin to drink, next time we are trying the shimmer shimmer ones.
Cheers!
